Developing digital teaching practices


This Trinity term a new short course is being piloted to enable staff with teaching responsibilities develop their use of digital tools and spaces to support learning. Over six sessions you will:

  • Consider how technology can extend your teaching practices and support your students' learning.
  • Understand the variety of learning technologies available
  • Reflect on how teaching approaches might need to be modified for an online environment
  • Experiment and innovate in your own context with the opportunities offered by digital technologies 
  • Experience the flipped classroom model and active blended learning and reflect on how it may be applied to your own setting

Intended audience

University and college employees / staff who have teaching responsibilities or will have in the future. This course is also open to colleagues from Oxford Brookes University.

This is a free, practical course over these dates:

  1. 11 April: What is flipped classroom?
  2. 11 April: Design your teaching for inclusivity;
  3. 16 April: Create video to support your teaching;
  4. 16 April: Video conferencing and virtual classrooms;
  5. 19 April: Assessment and feedback;
  6. 19 April: Interactive lectures: using real-time polling.

The course will use the flipped classroom model.

The flipped classroom model moves activities that learners 'can do' out of the face-to-face session into pre-session activities, for example didactic knowledge transfer that can be obtained through reading a paper or watching a video recording. This frees-up time in the session for activities that learners can do better together or with the support of a teacher, such as problem solving, group work or practical exercises. All pre-session activities and content will be available via a dedicated Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) site.

Participants will get the most benefit from attending all sessions so they can fully experience this approach and embed the knowledge gained into their own teaching.
