Learning technologists in Academic IT are offering Learning Design workshops from Michaelmas Term. These workshops support academic course teams with migrating to Canvas, the University’s new VLE, and will be of great value for both academics and staff.
The workshops allow academics and staff to review the balance and sequencing of different types of learning activity that make up their course. Storyboarding techniques are used to review current teaching and explore the potential of Canvas to support students’ learning.
- Overview of ABC Learning Design.
- The ‘shape’ of your module, paper or course.
- A storyboard of your module, paper or course.
- Canvas tools and other digital technologies to support students’ learning activities.
- Next steps: an action plan.
- Understand the principles of Learning Design and the six types of learning activities.
- Storyboard a new version of a paper, module or short course highlighting students’ learning activities.
- Identify any changes in your teaching approach as a result of the storyboarding activity.
- Identify where Canvas or other digital technologies can support students’ learning.
- Draw up an action plan to continue the work begun during the session.
Who should come?
The workshop is designed for course directors, module leaders and other members of academic staff with responsibility for planning and designing whole programmes of study or individual modules, papers or short courses. Participants should be experienced in the design of papers, modules and/or short courses. Previous attendance at a course run by the OLI’s Educational Development team is not obligatory, but participants should note that the workshop does not provide tuition in teaching skills or educational design.
The workshop may also be relevant to learning technologists, librarians and administrative staff who support academics in developing their teaching materials.
